I decided to go back to Rachel Held Evans for our group’s fall study this year. Back in September, I posted lesson plans for her book titled Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again. This time around, I decided to cover Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church. This was a winner with our class.
Evans bears her soul as she recalls a difficult period in her life when she struggled with her church experience. The class found ourselves empathizing with many of her feelings, struggling right along beside her throughout the study. It was a provocative way to reveal what we find troubling with church, and why we persevere.
I’ve broken the lesson plans into eight sections, one for the prologue plus the seven major parts of the book. We actually spent a couple of hour-long sessions on each of the first five parts, so it took us a full thirteen sessions to cover the whole book. Your mileage may vary.
As always, let me know your reactions in the Comments below.
Thanks!
