Mere Christianity – C.S. Lewis

At some point in your life, you’ve no doubt encountered the works of C.S. Lewis. This prolific and influential Christian author of the 20th century left behind quite a legacy – from his colorful The Chronicles of Narnia series to his well-reasoned arguments for the Christian faith in Mere Christianity.

We covered this latter book a few years back, and while written during WWII, it remains a timeless treasure supporting human nature and Christian beliefs. We covered the book in nine sessions, but it could honestly take you much longer. Each lesson could easily go for a couple of hours if you went through all the included topics. This is deep stuff. As with all my plans, I encourage you to pick and choose what you consider to be most compelling for your group.

I found a wonderful YouTube resource for this study. CSLewisDoodle produced some amazing videos for practically every chapter. While the chapter is read, an illustrator depicts Lewis’s ideas using creative cartoons and captions. In fact, a great way to “read” the book is to simply watch these videos, one after the other. They really help convey the messages Lewis is trying to get across. I’ve provided links to the associated videos in my lesson plans. You might even choose to play some/all of them in your group setting.

Mere Christianity is actually a compilation of a series of radio broadcasts Lewis did in 1944. You’ll notice the undertones of WWII in the book (Lewis served both in WWI and WWII). His arguments are intended for believers and unbelievers alike.

Please let me know how this study worked for you in the comments below.
