If you’re looking for a good book to cover the major religions in the world, you can’t go wrong with Adam Hamilton’s Christianity and World Religions. It’s been quite some time since our class went through this series, but it has aged well.
There is an accompanying DVD and Leader Guide for this series. As a heads-up, the DVD sessions follow the corresponding chapters in the book quite closely. In fact, if your group members haven’t read the chapter, they would get most of the critical points by just watching the videos. As a result, you’ll see that my lesson plans are heavy on the questions after the video, and light on the questions after the book. If you choose not to do the video, you could still ask the video questions since the material covered is so close to the book.
After the introductory chapter, Hamilton covers each of the five major world religions, a chapter at a time. In order, they are:
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
- Islam
- Judaism
- Christianity
It’s a great way to discover or review the similarities and differences between each of these religions. This series is a wonderful complement to Hamilton’s Christianity’s Family Tree, which focuses on the denominational history of Christianity. I’ve published lesson plans for that one as well.
